Key Features
|
The purpose of this piece is to understand about traditional men’s Japanese dress style and implementing those key features towards our own designs. From the presentation about Japan’s near environment by Dr. Pederson, I used it as a starting point in order to create my designs.
During the class we were able to learn about traditional men’s dress and be able to examine the cultural clothes themselves. I used pleats and clean lines used in traditional dress in order to create a foundation of my line. Japan’s appreciation for things symmetrical and asymmetrical was also used in my foundation. I used a flower as my main inspiration in order to create my design features such as the petal sleeves. Japan’s current fashion culture is known for their clean lines and complicated geometric designs. For the shirt I top-stitched, blind hemmed and used a mock French seam in order to encase all of my seams. I wanted to create a top that would be of high value due to the craftsmanship. For the skirt I design an asymmetrical skirt with tulle petals on the bottom. Instead of stitching the tulle onto the actual hem of the panel, I used a lining in order to attach the tulle in order to avoid possible bulking. For the sleeves and the skirt construction I used the draping method in order to find the best possible ‘lay’ of the fabric when placed on the body. All parts of the garment had a polyester/cotton blend. Although the fabric is not ‘cool’ during summer months on the wearer, the short silhouette would enable the wearer to stay cool. ![]()
